COWORKING SPACE

macosa

A coworking and exhibition space in an industrial area | September 2014, Valencia, Spain

This project was my thesis in Architecture at Universidad Politécnica de Valencia

Macosa is the name of an industrial complex that existed in Valencia, in a place that once was the hub of industry.

The only remaining building is a saw-tooth roofed industrial unit. Nowadays, the area is degraded, disintegrated, full of urban voids and without life.

The project starts with the idea of extending transversely the Central Park that will one day cross the city north to south,

in order to connect the opposite sides. The green areas arrive to the industrial unit, in a way that natural things merge with artificial ones; and orthogonal lines with organic ones. On the ground floor, exterior and interior spaces are connected with a 50 cm high platform, to create a united space that work together.

Two volumes are designed to establish the necessary relations with the industrial unit. The first one, opposite the pre-existing building and designed as a coworking space, is only one floor high and is connected to Macosa in the underground level. Through this connection, the exhibition activities held in the industrial building extend to the new one. The exhibition spaces gradually transform into coworking ones. The second building designed is two floors high and connected to the previous one in the underground level and also in the floor level through a floating walkway. This building grows vertically and longitudinally in order to cover the views to the high buildings in the surroundings. Public and private leisure and cultural activities are held in this building.

This project tries to give life to an abandoned area, to open to its surroundings, to place value on this industrial heritage and to make every part of the project together with the other.
